Literature Text

Kindness is strength.
Strength is everything.

Strength is compassion and patience, for yourself and others.
Strength is having the courage to let people know who you really are.
It is easier to close a door, than to open one.
Strength is knowing who you are and what's important to you, while
being aware that other people's opinions are as valid as yours.
(Even if you don't agree, they may have something to teach.)
Strength is knowing that there is always more you can learn, and that
mistakes and failures can make you stronger.
Strength is choosing your battles and standing up for your beliefs and
     yourself.
Strength is being honest, with others and yourself, keeping in mind that
some truths are too cruel to bear.
Silence is better than a lie.
Strength is living the Golden Rule.  Remember, no person is better than
anyone else, and treat people accordingly.
Strength is accepting who you are, even when you're not who you
     expected.
Strength mean knowing that the means are just as important as the
     end.
Strength is acknowledging your weaknesses without using them as
     excuses.
Strength is knowing that your mistakes are ok, as long as you take
     responsibility for them.
Strength is dealing with your problems, not running away from them or
waiting for them to take care of themselves.
Strength is being there for your friends, as they are there for you.

Strength will keep you alive.
Inspired by this line from Henry Rollins' book and poem, One From None:
"Kindness is strength.
It is easier to close a door, than to open one."

I wrote this years ago, but I think it still applies. It's actually much too long for a traditional mission statement, it's more a kind of moral code I want to/try to live by.

I call it a mission statement because when I wrote it the company I worked for was developing all these mission statements for each department, supposed to be the essence of what you strive for. I thought it was a good idea for life, too.
